The landscape plan

The landscape plan is a planning instrument that regulates the design, use and protection of landscapes and natural resources. It is drawn up by the municipality.

More than 280,000 people live in Wiesbaden on an area of around 20,400 hectares (approximately 30,000 soccer pitches). This area is mainly characterized by nature and the urban landscape.

We live in community with nature and the landscape, the flora and fauna and a natural balance that is functionally connected with us and contributes to a sustainable and liveable living and working environment.

Landscape planning ensures that nature and the landscape are protected and further developed in order to preserve the natural balance with all its functions.

It takes care of the protection and improvement of soil, water, air and climate and promotes biodiversity. It also preserves the beauty of nature and improves its recreational value.

We provide planning advice on the conservation and development of open spaces in populated and unsettled areas and develop measures to safeguard and promote biodiversity in Wiesbaden.

Our central planning tool is the landscape plan. This is currently being updated by the landscape planning integration contribution to the land use plan (draft status 2023).

The landscape plan is required by law.

The main objective is to preserve Wiesbaden's beauty and character while at the same time dealing with challenges such as climate change and the energy transition in order to protect nature and the landscape in the best possible way.

The formulation of the objectives in the landscape plan is based on a series of questions, e.g:

  • How can desired uses be implemented without significantly impairing the function of the ecosystem?
  • How can different usage requirements be made compatible and, if necessary, combined with each other?
  • What potentials arise from the functions of the natural environment and how can these be used in the development of the district?

The result is a plan that takes into account all the relationships between living beings and their environment and each other - including humans - and attempts to achieve a compatible solution with the help of our input.

Special attention is paid to the expansion of green spaces and the networking, protection of biotopes and bodies of water as well as the preservation of areas that are important for the climate. Wiesbaden needs a functioning and valuable natural environment in order to be well equipped for the future.
