The value of nature - preserving biodiversity
Biodiversity is the basis of our lives. We must preserve and promote it. Everyone can make a contribution.
In nature, everything has a purpose: every plant, every animal - everything is interlinked in a complex way. Every single element contributes to the web of life on earth. Nature provides us humans with a wealth of services: Plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms purify the water and air. They serve as food, provide raw materials for medicines and ensure fertility and a good climate. These ecosystem services are crucial for human survival. If threads are lost from the web, they become entangled and endanger life as we humans know it.
What can everyone do to protect biodiversity?
- Conservation of habitats: support protected areas! These include national parks, biosphere reserves, but also the protected areas in and around the city of Wiesbaden. They are indispensable for the preservation of local biodiversity, as they protect ecosystems and provide refuges for endangered species.
- Preservation of forests: Give preference to wood products with the FSC seal from sustainable forestry. The consumption of conventional meat and the purchase of (finished) products containing palm oil can also contribute to increased deforestation worldwide, as forest areas are cleared for the cultivation of animal feed and oil palms. Use recycled paper with the Blue Angel instead of paper made from virgin fibers.
- Sustainable agriculture: Choose food from sustainable regional agriculture that minimizes the use of pesticides and other harmful chemicals. This helps to preserve biodiversity in agricultural areas.
- Conscious consumption: Avoid products such as peat or conventionally grown cotton. The production of both products is associated with landscape destruction and major environmental damage.
- Avoid single-use plastic: Reduce the consumption of single-use plastic products. All too often, plastic waste pollutes the environment and endangers animals.
- Promote biodiversity in your own garden and on your balcony: Plant native greenery to create habitats for native animal and plant species. Green facades and roofs. Provide nesting aids for insects, bats and birds and refrain from using pesticides.
- Volunteering: Become an active member of nature conservation clubs and associations, donate money for an urban tree or take part in the Rhine clean-up.

What exactly is biodiversity?
Biodiversity - also known as biological diversity - comprises
- the diversity of species,
- genetic diversity within species and
- the diversity of habitats.
The interaction of all this diversity stabilizes the earth's ecosystem and makes it resilient.
How endangered is biodiversity?
Out of eight million plant and animal species in the world, one million are threatened with extinction. The current extinction rate is at least 100 times higher than the average of the last ten million years. Many people seem unimpressed by this. Why? Because they don't know what we are all losing. Anyone who has never seen a lapwing, an emerald lizard or wild orchids such as the orchid in the wild will not miss these animals and plants. Because you only protect what you know and love.
What is the situation in Wiesbaden?
The urban area of Wiesbaden includes many protected areas (NATURA 2000, nature and landscape conservation areas as well as biotopes worthy of protection) with the forest areas along the Taunus, the orchards in the east and the riverside areas along the Rhine and Main. However, the loss of species is also clearly noticeable in these areas. The Environment Agency is therefore developing a biodiversity strategy. The aim is to permanently secure and promote habitats for animals and plants both outside and inside urban areas.
