Sonnenberg - golden sun on red coat of arms

Sonnenberg is considered one of the most beautiful districts in Wiesbaden.

Historical roots and cultural highlights

Sonnenberg can look back on a long history: the first documentary references date back to 1157 and the town was granted its town charter in 1351. The historic town center, with the medieval castle and the old town wall, is an important landmark of the district. From the castle keep, you have a breathtaking view of the Sonnenberg valley and the old alleyways.

Sonnenberg Castle

The castle complex, which is surrounded by a picturesque castle garden, is the center of many cultural events. The annual summer festival and castle festival as part of the Wiesbaden Culture Days are just some of the highlights that attract residents and visitors.

Well situated

Today, Sonnenberg is an attractive residential area that shines with its high quality of life. Of all Wiesbaden's districts, the people of Sonnenberg have the highest purchasing power per year. The district is characterized by many historic villas. In recent decades, a number of new houses have been built on the outskirts. Around the newly designed Hofgartenplatz, many small stores, a supermarket, bakery, cafés and restaurants offer a good range of services.

The Goldstein Valley - paradise on your doorstep

The Goldstein Valley is one of the most beautiful forest meadow valleys in the Taunus and is a popular local recreation area. With its meadows, streams, wetlands and wooded areas, it invites the people of Wiesbaden to linger. The valley is part of the Rambach system: this network of paths provides wonderful access on foot to the nature and forests of the Taunus. The idyllic nature and cozy pubs make the Goldstein Valley a perfect destination for a break from city life.

A strong club life and traditions

Sonnenberg is known for its lively club life. The Turn- und Sportgemeinde Sonnenberg 1861, the oldest and largest club in the district, the Vokalmusik Wiesbaden and the volunteer fire department are just some of the many traditional clubs that shape social life. The Sonnenberg local history association looks after the small local history museum in the keep. The Förderverein Schöneres Sonnenberg is particularly committed to the design of the old town center.

Events and culture

Cultural life in Sonnenberg is diverse. The Sonnenberg Culture Days in June, the summer festival in July and the historic Christmas market are just some of the events that attract residents and guests to the district. The large flea market in September and the Kaisersaal, one of the most beautiful halls in Wiesbaden, offer additional cultural highlights.

Special quality of life

With its history, active club life and proximity to nature, Sonnenberg is an attractive place to live for young families and older generations. Sonnenberg scores with playgrounds, leisure facilities, the Konrad-Duden elementary school and daycare centers. Doctors and shopping facilities are also on site. The good connections to the city center make the district particularly liveable. The old coat of arms of Sonnenberg therefore fits well: it shows a radiant golden sun with an angel's face.

A highlight in Sonnenberg

The modern steel sculpture on the newly designed Hofgartenplatz was created by Gábor Török and Nina Stoelting in 2015. Its red color is reminiscent of the former streetcar, the so-called red line, which ended here.

From the statistics

People in Sonnenberg like to live in their own four walls: The ownership rate is 47 percent. However, Auringen has the highest home ownership rate (59.8%).
