Current economic and labor market barometer shows significant rise in unemployment

The general economic climate is sending out rather mixed signals: German economic output rose slightly in the 2nd quarter of 2024. The price-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) is 0.3% higher than in the second quarter of 2023. Sentiment in the German economy has stabilized at a negative level. The IFO business climate index stood at 88.6 points in June 2024, exactly the same as in June 2023. The current economic and labor market barometer contains key information in brief for anyone who wants to know about the state of Wiesbaden's economy.

According to the Office for Statistics and Urban Research, the number of unemployed people has risen compared to the same month last year, as in the previous quarter, and remains at a significantly higher level than before the coronavirus crisis. A total of 13,306 people were registered as unemployed in Wiesbaden in June 2024. This was 1,051 more than in the same month last year, with a percentage increase of 8.6%. The unemployment rate is 8.3 percent. In addition to Wiesbaden, the number of unemployed rose in all major Rhine-Main cities, particularly in Darmstadt (+ 11.3 percent) and Frankfurt (+ 11.2 percent). Wiesbaden still has the second-highest unemployment rate among the Rhine-Main cities after Offenbach.

The most recent data on employment relates to December 31, 2023 and again shows a significant increase in employment. On this date, exactly 116,700 Wiesbaden residents were employed and subject to social insurance contributions, which is 1,484
(or 1.3 percent) more than at the same time last year. The number of employees has even increased compared to the pre-coronavirus year 2019. This positive trend can also be seen in the other major cities in the Rhine-Main region; for example, the number of Offenbach residents subject to social insurance contributions rose by 2.1% between December 2022 and December 2023.
