To mark the birthday of the discoverer of hepatitis B, Professor Baruch Blumberg, World Hepatitis Day will be held on July 25, 2025, under the motto "Eliminate hepatitis".

The term "hepatitis" refers to an inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis is caused by an infection triggered by viruses or excessive consumption of alcohol, drugs and medication. According to current estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), 257 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis B and 71 million with hepatitis C. Hundreds of thousands of people in Germany are also affected by chronic hepatitis B and C. The aim is to decimate the number of infections by 2030.

Important to know: There are different types of hepatitis. The most common are hepatitis A, B and C - the rarer forms are D and E. All forms are caused by different pathogens and are independent diseases with different courses. As they usually have a chronic course and, in the worst case, lead to liver failure, it is particularly important to protect yourself and others from infection.
