Election and tasks of the Senior Citizens' Advisory Council

The Seniors' Advisory Council was established in 1976. The first elections to this body took place on January 26, 1977.

The political parties, church and social associations nominate candidates for election to the Seniors' Advisory Council. 21 members are elected for a four-year term of office by the citizens over the age of 60 who are entitled to vote in a free and secret postal ballot. A chairperson and 3 deputies are elected at a constituent meeting. Three working groups are formed in further meetings: Health and Social Affairs, Culture and Public Relations, Urban Planning, Construction and Transportation. These working groups elect a spokesperson from their ranks, who heads the working group and represents it on the Board.

On the basis of the right to be heard, speak and make proposals on matters relevant to senior citizens, the members use the opportunity to raise the interests of senior citizens before the municipal council, committees and local councils. Department heads who submit senior citizen-related proposals to the municipal council are required to involve the Senior Citizens' Advisory Council in such proposals in good time.

Once a month, the Senior Citizens' Advisory Council offers events on topics relevant to senior citizens. In line with the topic, expert speakers inform the audience about open questions and the current status of plans and projects on the part of the municipality and the state. Discussion rounds go into greater depth on the topics addressed.
