History

The South Cemetery was built between 1908 and 1909 as the second main municipal cemetery after the North Cemetery. The planning included a crematorium, which was put into operation in 1912 as the first cremation facility in Prussia. The cemetery complex with its trapezoidal cemetery opens up from the building ensemble on the Südfriedring into a baroque-style garden.

From here, a green strip lined with old trees of life opens up, leading to the Ehrenfeld. Equally impressive is the meandering ring path, which is more reminiscent of English garden design and leads along the most representative historical tombs, of which there are many. For example, the grave of Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, better known as 'The Red Baron'. The fighter pilot officer's grave is located in Westhain, number 77, and sponsors are still being sought for numerous other listed graves.
