Tunbridge Wells is located in the south-east of England in the far west of the county of Kent. The town of 45,000 inhabitants is the administrative seat of the Borough of Tunbridge Wells with a total population of 100,000.

Due to the iron-rich springs, the region developed into a health resort for the society of nearby London from the 18th century onwards. In 1909, King Edward VII awarded the town the title of "Royal".

On September 30, 1989, the friendship treaty with Wiesbaden from 1970 was extended to a fully-fledged town twinning in the Hessian state capital. At the reception for an English delegation, the previous cooperation was praised and further cooperation was promised.

The Mayor of Royal Tunbridge Wells and the Head of Administration signed the town's Golden Book during the festive ceremony in the town hall.
