On July 7, 1974, the German national team won the final of the FIFA World Cup for the second time after 1954 in Munich, beating the Netherlands 2:1.
Jürgen Grabowski, a striker from Eintracht Frankfurt, and national coach Helmut Schön were two Wiesbaden players involved in this historic title win.
Born in Dresden on September 15, 1915, Schön began his coaching career at SV Wiesbaden in the then Second Division South after his career as a professional footballer in 1951. The Hessian capital also remained his adopted home during his time as national coach from 1964 to 1978.
Jürgen Grabowski was born in Wiesbaden on July 7, 1944. He played for two Biebrich soccer clubs before moving to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga in 1965.
In honor of the victory, the two athletes were welcomed to their hometown on July 9, 1974. Mayor Schmitt congratulated his guests in a speech in the ballroom of the town hall.
Schön and Grabowski expressed their thanks for the warm welcome and then signed the city's Golden Book.
