Americans in Wiesbaden from 1945 to 1963 - The inside world of the outside world

The Wiesbaden City Archive is showing the digital exhibition "Americans in Wiesbaden from 1945 to 1963 - The inside world of the outside world".

A man plays bowling at a bowling alley at Lindsey Air Station.
The photo shows the bowling alley at Lindsey Air Station in 1950 from the collection of Dr. John Provan.

Together with Dr. John Provan, the Wiesbaden City Archive designed an exhibition about the American troops in Wiesbaden in 2021. The exhibition sheds light on the structures that the US Army established in Wiesbaden from 1945. But it also shows how the people of Wiesbaden experienced the American troops. The exhibition, which focuses on German-American relations in the state capital between 1945 and 1963, can be viewed on the City Archive's project page (see link at the bottom of the page).

The digital exhibition uses photographs, everyday objects, documents and background information to show how American life in Wiesbaden functioned, how the German-American relationship changed from the post-war years to the "economic miracle" and what a decisive contribution American aid such as the Marshall Plan made to the reconstruction of destroyed West Germany.
