Film City Wiesbaden
The "Filmstadt Wiesbaden" experienced its first heyday in the 1950s, when AFIFA, part of the old Ufa, produced feature films here. Classics such as "Wenn der weiße Flieder wieder blüht" and "Rosen-Resli" were made in Wiesbaden during this time.
Today, Wiesbaden is experiencing a second heyday as a film city: the state capital's municipal cinema, the Caligari FilmBühne, has developed into a nationally significant beacon in the film culture landscape in recent years. With an ambitious film program ranging from documentaries to arthouse productions, from children's and school cinema to short films, the Caligari offers cinema audiences a broad spectrum. Film series and a variety of discussion and special events with international guests as well as regional collaborations round off the program. The film festivals "goEast - Festival of Central and Eastern European Film", exground-filmfest and the "FernsehKrimi-Festival" are the highlights of the Caligari's annual program.
In September 2009, the Wiesbaden Media Center celebrated its tenth anniversary. The Media Center teaches pupils and teachers media skills in a variety of seminars and projects such as "Kino macht Schule", the French youth film festival Cinéfête and, since 2009, Britfilms, the English youth film festival.
The Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation opened the German Film House with the Murnau Film Theater on April 1, 2009. The Murnau Foundation is dedicated to preserving and maintaining Germany's film heritage. Internationally and nationally active film industry institutes and associations such as the German Cinema Industry Organization (SPIO), the Voluntary Self-Regulation Body (FSK) and post-production and distribution companies are now based at the Deutsches Filmhaus.
The film archives of the German Film Institute - DIF e.V. and the Murnau Foundation are also based in the state capital, as is the German Film and Media Rating Board (FBW), which awards the "valuable" and "particularly valuable" ratings here. Numerous film and production companies in the film industry are based in the state capital. They are a magnet for filmmakers.
