Apply for accompanied driving from the age of 17

You can submit an application for accompanied driving from the age of 17 for a category B driving license to the driving license authority responsible for you.

If you take part in "accompanied driving from 17", the minimum age for obtaining a category B and BE (passenger car) driving license is reduced to 17. Driving school training can be started earlier.

After successfully passing the driving test, you will receive a test certificate as proof of your driving license in Germany, which is valid for a maximum of three months after reaching the age of 18. However, you may only drive the car until your 18th birthday if accompanied by a person named on the test certificate. The accompanying person must meet certain requirements

Once you have reached the age of 18, you can apply for an EU driving license valid throughout Europe.

The accompanying person must

  • be at least 30 years old
  • have held a valid German or EU/EEA category B driver's license for at least five years
  • may be registered with a maximum of one point in the central traffic register
