Wurm took private acting lessons in Wiesbaden at a young age. She continued her training in Munich. Her career began in 1945 at the Wiesbaden Theater, where she performed until 1948. This was followed by engagements at the Städtische Bühnen Osnabrück and the Bühnen der Hansestadt Lübeck (1948-63), at the Theater der Stadt Essen and the Deutsches Theater Göttingen (1963-69), at the Bühnen der Stadt Köln (1969-78) and from 1978-83 at the Münchner Kammerspiele. She made repeated guest appearances at the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart, Bonn and Wiesbaden. In 1976, she was awarded the Roswitha-Ring in Bad Gandersheim.

Wurm achieved great popularity primarily through television, especially with the role of the grandmother in the ZDF series "Diese Drombuschs". Wurm appeared in 39 episodes from 1983-94.

She was awarded the German Critics' Prize for her work in 1967. In addition to her extensive work for theater, film and television, she also took part in numerous radio plays and audio book productions.

Wurm lived with her husband, a professor of economics, in the Bogenhausen district of Munich. Her urn was buried in Wiesbaden.
