After attending elementary school in Weyer, Philipp Wittgen transferred to the preparatory school in Usingen in 1879. In 1881, Wittgen continued his education at the teacher training seminar at the Usingen Preparatory School. In 1884, he passed his first teacher's examination for elementary schools. This was followed by a position as a teacher at the elementary school in Schierstein (opens in a new tab). Between 1891 and 1898, Wittgen worked at the elementary school in Wiesbaden. In 1898, he moved to the secondary school on Wiesbaden's Rheinstraße.
In 1903, Wittgen passed the teacher's examination for secondary schools in Kassel. Between 1914 and 1918, the teacher was deployed in the war for two years and continued his service from 1919 at the secondary school on Rheinstraße, Wiesbaden.
In 1925, Wittgen moved to the boys' secondary school on Luisenstraße and was appointed vice principal there on April 1. In 1928 he fell ill and left the service.
By resolution of the city council on May 23, 1951, a road was named after the brothers Philipp and Wilhelm Wittgen in the Sonnenberg (opens in a new tab) district.
