TuS Eintracht Wiesbaden 1846
TuS Eintracht Wiesbaden 1846 was registered on 22.06.1846 as "Turnverein Wiesbaden" and had 120 registered founding members. A list of 216 members has been preserved from 1847; most of them were craftsmen, small employees and the self-employed. This made the gymnastics club one of the first clubs in the city alongside TV Biebrich, TV Erbenheim and TSG Kastel. Men's gymnastics and fencing were the first departments of the club, from which TuS Eintracht Wiesbaden 1846 emerged in 1923. In 1852-59, it was hit by the ban on gymnastics clubs. In 1936, during the Nazi dictatorship and Gleichschaltung, it was incorporated into the Reichsbund für Leibesübungen of the NSDAP. The club was re-established in 1946.
Today (2015), it is active in both popular and competitive sports. The gymnastics department is the largest division. In addition to apparatus gymnastics, it also offers gymnastics, parent-child groups and senior gymnastics as well as hobby groups in basketball, bounce ball and badminton. The eleven departments include athletics, volleyball, karate, tennis and table tennis.
Among the club's sporting successes, the three Olympic participations (1964-72) and nine German championship titles of long-distance runner Manfred Letzerich stand out. From 1967-77, the men's and women's bounce ball teams played in the national league for many years. The women's handball and volleyball teams were also very successful in the 1980s and 1990s, playing in the second national league for several years.
For many years, the men's handball department was the flagship of competitive sport: the first team played in the first Bundesliga in 1976/77 and in the second Bundesliga for many years. As a professional team, it was separated from the club as a whole and formed its own commercial enterprise. After a main sponsor became insolvent and it became difficult to attract further sponsors, Eintracht gave up paid sport from the 1998/99 season onwards. Today, the Eintracht Wiesbaden handball team competes in the amateur sector in a joint venture with VfR Wiesbaden.
