Travers, Fritz

Lawyer, Lord Mayor

Born: 14.08.1874 in Karlsruhe

died: 17.07.1929 in Wiesbaden

Travers studied law and economics in Lausanne, Munich and Berlin, was a trainee lawyer at the district courts of Eltville and Wiesbaden and later worked at the Wiesbaden Regional Court and the Frankfurt am Main Higher Regional Court. In 1902/03, he worked as legal counsel for the German cooperative bank Sörgel, Parisius & Co. He then took up the position of magistrate's assessor in Wiesbaden, i.e. he was a member of the magistrate's council without voting rights and acted as head of the department for the administration of the poor. He held the position of deputy chairman of the Trade and Merchants' Court.

In 1906, he became an alderman of the city of Wiesbaden. In November 1913, he was elected 1st alderman of the city. In 1919, Travers, who had been particularly concerned with the problematic food supply for the Wiesbaden population during the First World War, temporarily took over the official duties of Lord Mayor Karl Glässing, who had been expelled from Wiesbaden by the French occupying forces.

In February 1923 - during the Ruhr War - Travers also had to leave the city and was not allowed to return until November 1924. From June 1925, he held office as the official Lord Mayor of the city of Wiesbaden, which he considerably enlarged in terms of area and population through the incorporations that took place in 1926 and 1928.

Travers, who belonged to the German People's Party (DVP), was also a deputy member of the Prussian State Council in 1925-26.
