Thermal bath Aukammtal

The opening of the Aukammtal thermal baths in 1976 marked the beginning of a new phase in Wiesbaden's spa industry. For the first time since the Romans tapped the healing springs, it became possible to swim in Wiesbaden's thermal waters.

There is a 300m2 outdoor pool connected to a 400m2 indoor pool. This is made possible by a 2.6 km long water pipeline from the Adler spring into the Aukammtal valley, which is connected to the Kochbrunnen and Schützenhof springs. The thermal water, which is up to 67 °C hot, is cooled down to 32 °C for bathing, treated with ozone and a small amount of chlorine is added.

The Aukammtal site was chosen because of its proximity to the DKD Helios Clinic in Wiesbaden (1970). The modern baths designed by Darmstadt architect Klaus Emmler cost DM 18 million. He had won the architectural competition in 1969. The ground-breaking ceremony was held in May 1973 by Lord Mayor Rudi Schmitt (SPD) and the opening was on Maundy Thursday 1976. The decision to build a new thermal baths had been made during the term of office of spa director Karl-Alfons Deisenroth (1967-76). The town hall had been discussing a new thermal bath to revive the spa since 1955. In 1966, the head of the Hessian state baths recommended the construction of sanatoriums and a thermal swimming pool in an expert report.

By 2001, ten million visitors in 25 years had left their mark, as had the aggressive sodium chloride water. After extensive renovation of the baths by architect Jürgen Fritz and the construction company Bilfinger + Berger, it was reopened in 2003. The first rush of visitors was already enormous.

Today (2015), the Aukammtal thermal spa, a health and wellness spa, has a diverse sauna landscape, a steam bath, a whirlpool with a light ceiling and an aqua sauna bar, as well as health offers such as aqua workout and fitness exercises accompanied by rhythmic music. Until 2008, the Aukammtal thermal baths were run by the spa facilities. Since then, it has belonged to the municipal swimming pool company Mattiaqua.
