Stein-Liebenstein zu Barchfeld studied law and political science in Marburg, Leipzig and Berlin, then obtained his doctorate and was appointed legal clerk in 1890, court assessor in 1895 and district judge in Birstein in 1900. He worked there until his transfer to the district court in Frankfurt am Main in 1906. In 1908, he moved to Limburg/Lahn as a district judge, where he was promoted to district court judge in 1910. From 1914, he worked as a district court judge in Wiesbaden. In 1931 he was appointed president of the district court and in 1933 he was appointed director of the district court. He held this position until 1934.
Stein-Liebenstein zu Barchfeld was a member of the Nassau Municipal State Parliament and the Provincial State Parliament from 1921-33, representing the city district of Wiesbaden. He was also a deputy member of the Prussian State Council from 1921-30 and from 1933 and a member of the Prussian State Council between 1930 and 1933, through which the Prussian provinces participated in Prussian state legislation and administration. In 1921-25 and 1930-32 he was a member of the German National People's Party (DNVP). In 1926-29 he was active in the Hesse-Nassau Urban and Rural Working Group (HNASL) and in 1933 in the Black-White-Red Campaign Front, which was founded in February of the same year and was mainly made up of former DNVP members who wanted to demonstrate their rejection of the Weimar party state in this way.
Stein-Liebenstein zu Barchfeld was a commander of the Rhenish Cooperative of the Order of St. John.
