Seebode, Joachim Dietrich Gottfried

Classical philologist, pedagogue, librarian

Seebode studied philology and philosophy in Halle, Berlin and Göttingen. After gaining his doctorate and habilitation, he worked for a short time as a private lecturer. In 1834, Seebode entered the service of the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, took up the post of headmaster at Coburg grammar school and was transferred to Gotha three years later. Due to his achievements in the teaching profession, he was appointed a consistorial councillor in 1837.

Four years later, Seebode entered the service of the Duchy of Nassau, where he worked as a school consultant with the rank of government councillor in Wiesbaden until 1849. In this function, he played a decisive role in the reform of the Nassau elementary school system. From 1851 until his retirement in 1867, Seebode was director of the Nassau State Library. In 1864, he was appointed Privy Councillor of the Duchy of Nassau.

In addition to his professional activities, Seebode was involved in many honorary functions, including serving as director of the Association for Nassau Antiquities and Historical Research from 1851-52.
