Schumann, Alfred

Schumann, Alfred
Craftsman, local politician
Born: May 4, 1898 in Apolda (Thuringia)
Died: May 25, 1960 in Wiesbaden

Alfred Schumann had lived in the Schierstein (opens in a new tab) district since 1933. He was a craftsman and foreman at the Wilhelm Schwerdtfeger & Co. machine tool factory.

Between 1921 and 1933, Schumann was, by his own account, a member and official of the SPD. After the National Socialists "seized power", he belonged to the German Labor Front (DAF). Schumann worked as a craftsman throughout the "Third Reich". Nothing is known about his military service during the Second World War.

After the end of the Second World War, Schumann was again active in the SPD and was chairman of the Schierstein local council between 1949 and 1960. Schumann was one of the driving forces behind the construction of the new Schierstein harbor school and new, urgently needed housing. His time as chairman of the local council also saw the reforestation of the woodland area at the golf course and the reclamation of the Naturfreunde-Haus at the Schiersteiner Märchenland settlement.

A street in the Schierstein district was named after him by resolution of the town council on October 10, 1974.
