Schütz, Johann Philipp
Schütz, Johann Philipp
Catholic clergyman
born: 04.08.1796 in Camberg
died: 27.03.1864 in Meran
Schütz was ordained a priest in Mainz in 1820, became chaplain in Camberg and took up the newly created chaplaincy in Wiesbaden in 1821, where he became parish priest in 1825 at the instigation of the state government. The paraments and ecclesiastical equipment from the secularized monasteries and convents were housed in Wiesbaden, which were used to endow the new diocese of Limburg in 1827.
Duke Wilhelm zu Nassau commissioned Schütz to pack the items and send them to Limburg. In 1828, he appointed him dean of the newly established district chapter of Wiesbaden. As early as 1832, Schütz moved to Eltville as parish priest and episcopal commissioner and at the same time became a cathedral chaplain, a member of the second chamber of the Assembly of Estates in 1834 and its president from 1837-45. In 1852 he became the bishop's representative on the bench of the Nassau state parliament. As early as 1853, he retired to Merano for health reasons.
Schütz was considered the Duke's favorite and was one of the candidates for the office of Bishop of Limburg in 1834 and 1840, but was rejected by the church because of his closeness to the government and his stance on the blessing of mixed marriages and liturgical issues.
