Born: 30.04.1847 in Schleusingen
died: 28.01.1940 in Wiesbaden
After leaving school, Schüler volunteered for military service. During his twelve years of service, which he completed with the rank of sergeant, he took part in the German wars of unification and was awarded the Iron Cross II Class for his bravery during the siege of Paris. Schüler then joined the State Archives in Idstein as a clerk and archive secretary. When this was relocated to Wiesbaden in 1881, Schüler also moved to the spa town.
In addition to his work as an archivist, Schüler wrote numerous essays on the history of the town and Nassau's local history, most of which were published in the local press. His series with "Pictures from Wiesbaden's past" in the Wiesbadener Tagblatt was particularly popular. This was followed by a series on "The transformation of the city of Wiesbaden in modern times" as well as many individual articles dealing with the rapid rise of Wiesbaden. Together with Christian Spielmann, he published the local history newspaper supplement "Alt-Nassau". Under the pseudonym Gottlieb Schleusinger, Schüler also wrote many articles on the cultural and moral history of the state and other towns in the Nassau region.
On the occasion of his 25th anniversary of service, the Emperor awarded him the Cross of Merit in Gold. Schüler retired in 1921.
