Schellenberg, Gustav August Ludwig David
Botanist, publisher
born: 28.09.1882 in Wiesbaden
died: 04.06.1963 in Wiesbaden
After leaving school in 1901, Schellenberg worked as a trainee in his parents' business, the Schellenberg'sche Hofbuchdruckerei. He studied botany in Zurich, Heidelberg and Munich from 1903-10 and obtained his doctorate. After holding various positions in scientific institutes, he returned to Wiesbaden in 1913 to work as editor-in-chief of the Wiesbadener Tagblatt (WT) until he was called up for military service in 1915. After the war, which he had survived in the home army, he continued his academic career in Munich, Kiel and Göttingen. In 1919 he habilitated and in 1926 was appointed associate professor in Göttingen. After the death of his mother Marie Schellenberg in 1932, he managed the print shop and the WT.
After the National Socialists came to power, the WT escaped the death of the press, as S. had already shifted the orientation of the Tagblatt slightly to the right. However, he had to dismiss the esteemed Jewish editor-in-chief Hermann Lekisch in accordance with the 1933 editor-in-chief law. As a member of the "Stahlhelm" front fighters' association, Schellenberg joined the SA and then the NSDAP in 1934. Like all other newspaper publishers active during the Nazi era, Schellenberg was banned from his profession and his home by the American occupying forces in 1945.
He was able to publish the WT again in 1949, but soon realized that the Wiesbadener Kurier, licensed by the American administration, had largely taken over the market. Schellenberg worked as a partner and one of two managing directors for the WT created by his forefathers until a few months before his death. He is buried in the North Cemetery.
