Schauß received his first musical lessons from his father, an organist at a village church. In 1879, Schauß was employed as a singing teacher at the grammar school in Wiesbaden, where he remained until his retirement in 1920. For over 30 years, Schauß was the conductor of various Wiesbaden choral societies.

Schauß became famous as a composer of songs for male choirs. He created over 120 choral songs, the best known of which include "Ich hört ein Vöglein pfeifen", "Einst war ich so glücklich" (the song from the Westerwald), "Heimweh", "Maientag", "Die Amsel im Walde", "Ich liebte einst ein Mädchen", "Die Abreise" (Morgen will mein Schatz abreisen) and "Frühmorgens" (Noch ruht das Land im Dämmerschein).

Schauß was laid to rest in a grave of honor by the city of Wiesbaden in the North Cemetery.
