Schaeffer came to Nassau in 1802 as a major and battalion commander from the service of the Electorate of Mainz. In 1806/07, as colonel and commander of the Nassau troops, he took part in the campaign against Prussia, which Nassau had to fight for Napoleon due to its membership of the Confederation of the Rhine. As a general, Schaeffer held various commanding positions during the war in Spain in 1808/09 before becoming head of the general command under Duke Friedrich August.
In 1813, Schaeffer transferred to the service of Baden after a dispute with Minister Ernst Marschall von Bieberstein.
