born: 02.12.1831 in Biebrich
died: 26.09.1911 in Wiesbaden
Sartorius studied law in Heidelberg and Berlin and passed the first and second examinations for the higher civil service in the Duchy of Nassau in 1853 and 1858 respectively. In 1859, he served as a volunteer in the 2nd Nassau Infantry Regiment (sub-lieutenant). Sartorius continued his administrative career as an accessory to the state government in Wiesbaden, becoming government secretary in 1865 and Wiesbaden Electoral Commissioner in 1860-66.
During the German War of 1866, Sartorius accompanied the Austrian troops during their stay on the territory of the Duchy of Nassau as Nassau's federal civil commissioner. After the annexation of Nassau in 1866, Sartorius was taken into the Prussian civil service of the newly formed administrative district of Wiesbaden (1868 government assessor, 1869 government councillor). As a supporter of the National Liberal Party, he enjoyed additional trust and from 1870-75 was honorary director of the Wiesbaden Institute for the Blind. In 1881, he was elected state director and thus senior official of the Nassau municipal association, a position he held until his retirement in 1905, from 1901 with the title "state governor".
In addition to road construction and welfare, he was particularly interested in agriculture. Sartorius was a member of the provincial committee from 1889-1905, was president of the Nassau Association of Farmers and Foresters (1884-1907) and of the Chamber of Agriculture of the Wiesbaden administrative district (approx. 1895-1907).
Sartorius was a board member of the Nassau Trade Association for more than 40 years. He wrote the catalog of the 1st Nassau Art and Trade Exhibition of 1863 and published several economic statistics on Nassau. Sartorius was a member of the committee for the erection of the Niederwald monument from its foundation in 1872.
As a member of the National Liberal Party, he stood in the 1887 Reichstag elections as a joint candidate of National Liberals and Conservatives in the Wiesbaden-Rheingau-Untertaunus constituency, but did not receive a mandate.
