Austrian, Anton
Mechanic, local politician, mayor of Medenbach
Born: May 12, 1912 in Zlabings (today: Slavonice in the Czech Republic)
Died: December 2, 1992 in Wiesbaden

Anton Österreicher lived in his birthplace of Zlabings until 1945 and was a trained mechanic by trade. Österreicher's hometown was in the Sudetenland, which was part of Czechoslovakia during the interwar period. Österreicher was drafted into the Czechoslovakian army for military service from 1934. As part of the Munich Agreement of September 29, 1938, the Sudetenland was annexed by the German Reich.

On January 27, 1939, Anton Österreicher applied for membership of the NSDAP and was accepted into the party with retroactive effect from November 1, 1938. From 1941, Österreicher did military service as a non-commissioned officer in a pioneer unit. At the end of the war, Österreicher was taken prisoner of war. After his release, he initially lived in Gastern, Austria. In 1946, he moved to Baumerlenbach in what is now Baden-Württemberg. Anton Österreicher initially concealed his NSDAP membership in his proceedings before the criminal court. Once the Trial Chamber had established his membership, it asked him to make a statement. Österreicher justified his silence by stating that he had never had a party book or membership card. He went on to explain that at the time he joined the party, he did not have any personal information at his disposal due to his military service in the Czechoslovakian and German armies. As a result, the Öhringen District Court discontinued the proceedings against him in June 1948.

Österreicher later lived in what is now the Wiesbaden district of Medenbach (opens in a new tab). He worked for the Federal Post Office. In Medenbach, Anton Österreicher was involved in community work and local politics. In 1966, he was elected head of the local court. In 1968, as a member of the SPD, he was elected as the fourth alderman of the municipal council and in 1969 as honorary mayor. He held this office until Medenbach was incorporated into the state capital of Wiesbaden on January 1, 1977. Österreicher then worked for three months as the new head of the Medenbach local administration.

A street in the district of Medenbach was named after the local politician by resolution of the municipal council on January 31, 1995.
