A trained machinist, Niedenthal worked in the Hessian police service. As First Chief Superintendent of Police, he was Deputy Head of the Technical Department at the Hessian Police School in Wiesbaden-Kohlheck. He joined the CDU in 1970 and was Chairman of the Hessian Police Officers' Working Group within the CDU from 1972-88.

In addition to his profession, he was also involved in Wiesbaden city politics as a CDU member. He was a member of the Wiesbaden-Dotzheim local council for many years. He had been a member of the city council of the state capital since 1972. In 1994, he moved to the city council. The former gymnast and athlete has shown great commitment to sport in Wiesbaden. For 14 years, he represented the interests of sports clubs as "Sports Councillor" for sports and leisure matters. He was held in high esteem across all party lines. After his retirement in 2008, he was made an elder of the city. He was awarded the Gold Citizens' Medal and the Hessian Order of Merit with ribbon.

From 1993-95, Niedenthal was a member of the German Bundestag in Bonn. On the occasion of the 225th anniversary of the Wiesbaden casino, he wrote a book about the Wiesbaden casino.
