After growing up in Essen and Gotha, Müller-Werth lived in Wiesbaden from 1913. Here he attended the Realgymnasium in Biebrich and then studied political science in Jena, where he completed his studies with a doctorate. From 1925, he worked as a journalist for the "Neue Wiesbadener Zeitung" and moved to Bielefeld in 1929 to work for the "Westfälische Zeitung", where he remained until 1941. He then worked in the commercial sector for several years.

From 1949 until his retirement in 1965, he was employed by the City of Wiesbaden. He initially worked as a press officer and from 1951 as head of the Wiesbaden city archives. In this capacity, he worked on various topics of Wiesbaden's city history, such as the "History and Municipal Politics of the City of Wiesbaden", the history of the municipal hospitals, the eye sanatorium and the town hall, or the biography of the former Lord Mayor Karl Bernhard von Ibell. He also wrote on German foreign policy in the 19th and 20th centuries and on the history of the Nassau press.
