Mosques

The term "mosque" comes from the Arabic language ("masjid", "place of prostration"). The Arabic term "jami" (Turkish "cami") is generally used for the large mosque, also known as the "Friday mosque".

The mosque is the most important religious center of Muslim community life. It is not only a ritual space, but also a general social meeting place for Muslims of different origins and languages. In addition to teaching the religion and religious values, mosques are also a place of integration. Koran lessons, learning Arabic, German courses and homework help are all part of the educational program. Social activities such as Islamic festivals, weddings and other festivities as well as sports programs are also organized. In Germany, most mosque communities are organized as registered associations. They are financed by members' contributions and donations.
