Louise Princess of Belgium

Louise Princess of Belgium

born: 18.02.1858 in Brussels

died: 01.03.1924 in Wiesbaden

The daughter of Leopold II. King of Belgium (1835-1909) and his wife Marie Henriette was married to Ferdinand Philipp Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1844-1921); however, the marriage was not a happy one. After extramarital affairs, she met the Croatian Count Geza von Mattachich-Keglevich (1867-1923) in Vienna in 1895 and left her husband. She subsequently became heavily indebted, as she had expected a large inheritance after the death of her father and had received generous loans.

In 1898, she was imprisoned at her husband's instigation and sent to a private asylum. In 1904, Louise was freed by two escape helpers in Bad Elster, where she was staying for a cure, and fled to France, where a counter-appraisal was carried out. After divorcing her marriage and being disinherited by her father, she lived with Count Mattachich in various European cities, where she again left behind many debts. She received support from her sister, Princess Stefanie of Belgium.

After Mattachich's death in 1923, Louise stayed at the Hotel Nassauer Hof. She died of pneumonia and was buried in the South Cemetery.
