Litfaß completed an apprenticeship in the printing and book trade. In 1845, he took over the management of the family printing and publishing house and developed the public notice or "Annoncir" columns that were later named after him, which he was able to market skillfully and profitably.
For health reasons, Litfass traveled regularly to Wiesbaden from 1855 onwards. He died here during a stay at a health resort.
