Lehr attended grammar school in Idstein and studied medicine in Marburg from 1791. After graduating and obtaining his doctorate, he worked as a town and country doctor in Wiesbaden from 1794 and was appointed Court Councillor in 1803, Privy Court Councillor in 1808 and Privy Councillor in 1810. From 1815 to 1818, he was Chief Medical Councillor and a full member of the Duchy of Nassau state government. In addition, he was personal physician to Duke Wilhelm zu Nassau and was also consulted by Goethe. In 1818, Duke Wilhelm appointed him spa physician in Wiesbaden.

In 1799 he published the work: "Versuch einer kurzen Beschreibung von Wiesbaden und seinen warmen Mineralquellen". A street in Wiesbaden is named after Lehr.
