Kreis was initially a pupil of Johann de Laspée in Wiesbaden from 1807. He later went to Switzerland toYverdon (Iferten) to Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, where he worked as a teacher. After returning with his wife Luise, de Laspée's daughter, he took up a position in his father-in-law's educational establishment. In 1833, he moved to the boys' institute of his brother-in-law Heinrich de Laspée. After his brother-in-law's death, Kreis took over the management of the institution in 1834.
One year later, he transformed the educational institution into Kreis'sche Knabeninstitut, which pursued the goal of educating the pupils "entrusted to it to become good people, good Christians and useful citizens through the natural development of their overall abilities". In the 1865/1866 school year, 47 pupils were taught in four classes by four teachers. Only at an advanced age did Kreis hand over the management of his institution to his son Heinrich, who continued to run the institute successfully.
On the occasion of his 50th anniversary, Kreis was awarded the IV. Class of the Military and Civil Order of Adolph of Nassau for his services to the education of young people.
