After studying pharmacy, Kraatz first worked as a pharmacist and then became an actor and writer. Not only in Wiesbaden and at many theaters in Germany, but also abroad, he was one of the most successful playwrights with his comedies and farces. Translated into French and English, "Der Hochtourist", "Logenbrüder" and "Der Kilometerfresser" met with enthusiastic acclaim in Paris, London and New York.

Among the many awards Kraatz received was the "Palme" of the "Académie Française", awarded in Paris in 1911. Wit, humor and situation comedy are characteristic of the works of the poet and actor, who was also in demand as a carnival performer and who became president of the Wiesbaden carnival club "Sprudel" in 1912.
