Klober, Matthias

Community and poor doctor

born: 31.08.1813 in Mainz

died: 22.06.1895 in Mainz

Klober studied medicine in Giessen from 1833-38, where he was imprisoned for several weeks due to his membership of the Rhenania student fraternity.

On 28.04.1839, he was elected municipal doctor in Kastel. His district also included Kostheim, where he married Apollonia Hartmann from Flörsheim on July 11, 1849. Klober was involved in several associations, including the Democratic Association, from which he was later expelled due to disagreements. From 1861-65, he was chairman of the Kastel gymnastics club and led the association for the support of the needy. Klober also campaigned for the construction of hospitals in Flörsheim and Kastel.

In 1889, Klober and two members of the Dyckerhoff family were among the initiators of a hospital association in Kastel. In his will, he bequeathed 20,000 marks to the municipality of Flörsheim for this purpose. The municipality of Kastel was to use more than twice this sum, namely 50,000 marks from his estate, to build a hospital. Klober worked here as a doctor for the poor until 1881, after which he was relieved of his duties and moved back to Mainz.

In an obituary, it was emphasized that he had selflessly cared for the inhabitants of Kastel during a cholera epidemic. On 08.11.1911, the municipality named a street after him. He was awarded an honorary grave in the Kastel cemetery.
