Kleinmann was a journalist and head of the politics department at the Wiesbadener Kurier from 1960-89. In 1988 he became a member of the "Association of German Writers".

Kleinmann loved the island of Mallorca, as evidenced by his biography of Archduke Salvator, the "uncrowned king of Mallorca" (1991). In 1984 he received the first prize for tourism promotion, and in 1989 the Hafiz Literature Prize. Kleinmann was committed to the literary genres of essay, narrative and genre fiction. In a journalism competition organized by the German Travel Agency Association, he was awarded first prize for a report on a study trip to Pakistan, Afghanistan and India. He wrote reports, short prose and literary miniatures and contributed to around 50 anthologies.

He was buried in the South Cemetery.
