The son of a teacher, he studied Romance philology in Strasbourg and Marburg and was awarded his doctorate in 1881. In 1884, he took up a post as head teacher at the Oberrealschule in Wiesbaden (now the Oranienschule). In the winter of 1885/86, Klein, whose academic work included researching the works of French troubadours, was given temporary leave to go to Paris for a period of study.
After returning to Wiesbaden, he resumed his teaching activities and worked as a (paid) librarian in 1901/02 and as a management assistant from April 1902. He was appointed professor in the summer of 1902. From April 1, 1905, he was principal of the Schule am Zietenring (upper secondary school for boys, today: Leibnizschule) in Wiesbaden.
In addition to his work as a teacher, he dealt intensively with questions of French history and published various books on this subject. He also published poems in Wiesbaden dialect under the pseudonym "Otto Nielk".
