Jacoby, son of the publisher Dr. Johann Adam Jacoby, began an apprenticeship as a bookseller, broke off his subsequent studies at the University of Leipzig and became a journalist. In 1874, he joined the "Niederschlesischer Anzeiger" in Glogau as an editor. From 1878-91, Jacoby worked for the "Mainzer Tagblatt". During this time, he was also active in carnival and a popular carnival speaker. He was also a member of the "Mainzer Carneval Verein 1838 e.V." (MCV) and its president for five years from 1884. In 1892, he inherited his father's bookshop in Wiesbaden. Jacoby then settled here and from then on worked as a publishing bookseller and freelance writer.
He wrote operas, farces and farces, among other things. Probably his best-known play, a joint work with the writer Carl Laufs, whom he had met in Mainz, was the 1889 farce "Pension Schöller", which is still performed today. Jacoby's son Georg filmed the play in 1960 with Theo Lingen in the leading role. Another film version was made in 1980 by director Wolfgang Spier with Harald Juhnke and others. Jacoby is buried in the Südfriedhof c emetery.
