Homecoming memorial

In 1966, the artist and materials researcher at Dyckerhoff, Alfred Widmer, was commissioned to create a memorial for returnees. In addition to commemorating all those who had returned home from captivity as prisoners of war, the aim was to demonstrate the possible applications of the modeling concrete that Widmer had helped to develop.

The sculpture, which was unveiled in Biebrich in 1966, shows two people lying in each other's arms and comforting each other. It symbolizes the protection, support and comfort that all families torn apart and destroyed by war should experience. The inscription on the base of the memorial, also designed by Widmer, reads "Humanity is the last refuge of freedom".
