Güth attended grammar school in Hadamar until 1864 and then studied classical philology and history, which was followed by a position as a tutor. From 1872, he worked as a teacher in Hersfeld.
In 1877, he moved to Wiesbaden, where he initially worked as a senior teacher at the Oberrealschule. Under his directorship (1901-12), the school was converted into a Realgymnasium. Güth was regarded as a popular schoolman.
He also worked for many years as a city councillor (Progressive People's Party) and wrote various publications, including "Geschichte der Realschule zu Wiesbaden" (1882), "Städtische Oberrealschule mit Reform-Realgymnasium i. E. zu Wiesbaden, Festschrift 1857-1907" from 1907 (in progress) and "Leitfaden" für den Geschichtsunterricht in höheren Schulen (1891).
