Fritz Gontermann was born the son of the leather manufacturer Peter Herrmann Heinrich Gontermann and his wife Eleonore, née Weinbrenner. He first attended elementary school and then a private secondary school in Neunkirchen. At Easter 1883, he transferred to the grammar school in Dillenburg, where he passed his Abitur in 1889.
Gontermann first studied philosophy in Marburg for a semester before going on to study medicine in Berlin, Munich and Kiel. He passed the preliminary medical examination in Berlin in 1891 and the state medical examination in Kiel in 1894. Gontermann submitted his dissertation on "Nephrotomy and Nephrectomy" to the medical faculty of Kiel University on October 30, 1894.
In 1903, he married Elisabeth, née Gontermann, and set up as a general practitioner in Niedernhausen, where he also worked as a doctor in neighboring Naurod. Fritz Gontermann died of old age in Niedernhausen on April 26, 1953. A street in the Wiesbaden district of Naurod was named after him.
