Göbel, Ernst

Teacher, district school inspector
Born: May 11, 1897 in Kloppenheim
died: December 25, 1962 in Erbach

After attending the Kloppenheim elementary school, he trained as a teacher at the Usingen teacher training college. Between 1916 and 1918, Göbel took part in the First World War. After the end of the war, he passed his first teacher's examination and then worked as a primary school teacher in Hirschberg.

In 1920, Göbel passed his second teacher's examination. From 1933, he worked as an elementary school teacher in Grebenroth in the Hintertaunus region. Göbel was a member of the SPD from 1921 to 1933. He had been a member of the Unterlahnkreis district council since 1926 and was the leading candidate in the 1933 district council elections. After the National Socialists "seized power", Göbel was arrested twice because he had sharply criticized the NSDAP before 1933.

In addition to his political commitment, Ernst Göbel was also a churchwarden of the Catholic church in his home parish of Niedermeilingen (now Heidenrod).

According to his own statements, Göbel was transferred to Hirschberg against his will in 1933. There he became a member of the National Socialist People's Welfare Organization in 1935, where he also held the office of local group leader from 1935 to 1945. Göbel also joined the NSDAP in 1937. As a teacher, he was a member of the National Socialist Teachers' Association from 1935 to 1945. He was also a member of the Nazi war victims' welfare organization.

Despite his membership of Nazi organizations, his relationships with the Nazi authorities were not without conflict, probably also due to Göbel's active commitment to the Catholic Church.

In 1944, Göbel saved Justine and Wilhelm Klärner from arrest. According to the husband's testimony, the master tailor and his Jewish wife had become homeless as a result of the bombing raids on Frankfurt am Main. The couple fled to Eigenroth, a neighboring village of Göbel's home town of Grebenroth. Göbel received the couple's identity papers from the responsible NSV district administration of the Unterlahn district and did not pass them on, so the couple were considered missing. This information cannot be verified on the basis of further historical documents, but seems plausible based on Wilhelm Klärner's statement.

In 1945, Göbel was dismissed by the military government after the American occupation, but was reinstated as a teacher in May 1946. His trial was dropped on August 3, 1946. From 1950, Göbel worked as a district school inspector at the Erbach (Odenwald) school board.
