Firnhaber attended the grammar school in Hildesheim from 1821, then studied philosophy in Göttingen from 1829-33 and obtained his doctorate. In 1837 he became a collaborator (assistant teacher) at the grammar school in Verden and from 1837 a prince's educator in Hanover. In 1838 he was appointed grammar school professor and from 1841 taught at the grammar school in Hanau and from 1845 in Wiesbaden. From 1854-68 he worked as a consultant with the rank of government councillor for the ducal Nassau school system and was also promoted to Privy Government Councillor. From 1882 he was chairman of the Protestant Royal Gustav Adolf Association. Firnhaber rendered outstanding services to the development of the elementary school system, in particular due to his main works "Die nassauische Simultan-Volksschule" (1881-1883) and "Die evangelisch-kirchliche Union in Nassau" (1895).
