Ebhardt studied law in Giessen. In 1782, he began his career as a civil servant in the service of the Prince of Nassau-Weilburg. He was initially employed as a clerk in Weilburg and in Saarwerden, which at the time belonged to Nassau-Weilburg. There he became Rentmeister in 1789. After the loss of the territories on the left bank of the Rhine to France, he moved to the Weilburg residence, where he was appointed auditor in 1803. In 1809 he was appointed Court Chamber Councillor and in 1810 Court Councillor. From 1815, he worked in Wiesbaden in the ducal government as Director of the Chamber of Accounts.

In addition to his profession, he dealt with scientific issues and in particular with the history of the city of Wiesbaden. In 1817, he published his main work "Geschichte und Beschreibung der Stadt Wiesbaden" (History and Description of the City of Wiesbaden). In 1821, he was involved in the founding of the Verein für Nassauische Altertumskunde und Geschichtsforschung and held the office of first director (chairman) from 1821-24.
