Ebhardt studied law and economics in Giessen and Heidelberg. After successfully completing his studies, he entered the judicial service in Nassau and worked as a judge in Herborn, Dillenburg and Usingen (1845 as a court councillor). In 1849-60 he was a judge at the Court and Court of Appeal in Wiesbaden and in 1860-67 a judge at the local High Court of Appeal.
After the annexation of Nassau and the reorganization of the court system, he worked as a judge at the Prussian High Tribunal in Berlin, the supreme court for all of Prussia, from 1867. After his retirement in 1879, he returned from Berlin to Wiesbaden.
