German-Greek Society Wiesbaden/Mainz e.V.

The German-Greek Society Wiesbaden/Mainz e.V. was founded in 1959 in the Hessian State Theater Wiesbaden as part of the International May Festival.

In the spirit of the German-Greek Cultural Agreement of 1956, the aims of the society were formulated as promoting commonalities between the two peoples, deepening friendly relations between the two countries and expanding intellectual and cultural exchange. In addition, encounters between Greeks and Germans living in Germany are to be intensified and consolidated. To this end, the society organizes cultural, scientific and artistic events and lectures. There is intensive contact with the Greek communities in Wiesbaden and Mainz, the Greek church community in Wiesbaden-Biebrich and the Greek associations.

The founding president was the archaeologist Prof. Dr. Willy Zschietzschmann (1900-1976).

The association has over 200 members. The German-Greek Societies of Germany have been united since 1964 to form an association that publishes the yearbook "Hellenika".
