Breidbach-Bürresheim, Anton Philipp Freiherr von (gen. von Riedt)

General, Parliamentarian

born: 03.11.1791 in Mainz

died: 30.10.1878 in Heddernheim

Breidbach-Bürresheim joined the cavalry in 1809 as a cadet and was promoted to lieutenant in the same year. In 1813 he took part in the campaign in Spain for a few months as a cavalry captain of the cavalry, for which Nassau had to provide troops for Napoleon as a result of its membership of the Confederation of the Rhine; in 1815 he took part in the Battle of Waterloo as adjutant (with the rank of major) to the Nassau prince, the later Duke Wilhelm zu Nassau.

From 1826-47 (as an elected member) and from 1858-63 (as a representative of Archduke Stephan of Austria), Breidbach-Bürresheim was, in addition to his military duties, a member of the First Chamber (Herrenbank) of the Nassau House of Representatives and, in 1848, a member of the Pre-Parliament of the Frankfurt National Assembly. From 1827-36 and from 1841-45 he was also director of the Wiesbaden court theater. He was also the initiator and co-founder of the Nassau Society for Natural History and the Museum of Natural History.

In 1830, Breidbach-Bürresheim was promoted to lieutenant colonel, then colonel and finally general "à la suite" (in the duke's retinue). He was also one of the initiators of the Waterloo monument erected on Luisenplatz in 1865.
