After training at the Mainz University of Music and working at the Stadttheater Oberhausen and the Mainz Operetta Theater and the Great House there, Wiesbaden's General Music Director Heinz Wallberg succeeded in hiring him in the same position at the Hessian State Theater Wiesbaden in 1962. In this role, he conducted the Wiesbaden City Choir and the Opera Choir from 1964.
When he retired in the 1977/78 season, he left the theater to head the opera school at the Wiesbaden Conservatory.
During his time at the Mainz theater, he also worked at Südwestfunk (SWF) and was responsible for the musical design of many radio broadcasts from the Mainz studio.
He also made a name for himself as a composer of carnival songs, including the carnival song "Mainz bleibt Mainz", made famous by Ernst Neger.
