Together with the pastor Gustav Bergmann (1856-1904) from Bochum, whom she married in Finschhafen (New Guinea) in 1888, Bergmann traveled to "German New Guinea" in the Solomon Islands (since 1973 Papua New Guinea) in 1887 on behalf of the Rhenish Mission (Barmen).

The Bergmanns' mission was to introduce the islanders to Christianity. The couple built a small house in Bogadijim on the island of Siar with the simplest of means and taught the children elementary school.

Bergmann's first son died of yellow fever in 1892. When another son and Bergmann herself also fell ill with yellow fever, she returned to Biebrich with her children in 1898. Gustav Bergmann succumbed to the consequences of blackwater fever in Sydney on 25.04.1904.

Bergmann lived in her parents' house in Biebrich until her death in 1952. Her cleared grave in Biebrich cemetery was reconstructed in 1998 and remains as a grave of significance to the history of the town.
